JOSE Mourinho was sent off for the first time as Manchester United manager on Saturday and could face a stadium ban in the latest flashpoint of his controversial career.

Mourinho was forced to watch the second half of United's disappointing 0-0 draw against Burnley from the stands after a row with referee Mark Clattenburg during the interval over his decision not to award United a penalty.

Incredibly, it was the 13th time Mourinho has been punished during his time as manager of Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and now United.

He already faces one charge of misconduct from the Football Association following comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to United's game against Liverpool on October 17 and further separate action looks likely following Saturday's incident once Mr Clattenburg has filed his report.

Mourinho's career has been littered with fines and suspensions and he also faced criticism for poking Pep Guardiola's assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye during a heated Clasico game between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

He complained last week about the quality of his life living in a Manchester hotel and there will be those associated with United who will be alarmed that Mourinho's behaviour will reflect badly on the club. Mourinho refused to speak to media outlets about the incident with Mr Clattenburg, which United say was a verbal altercation.

The high drama began when Mourinho reacted wildly on the touchline after one of his players, Matteo Darmian, fell in the penalty area following a challenge by Burnley's Jon Flanagan.

Mr Clattenburg waved away United's penalty appeal and Mourinho continued to protest as the teams went in for half-time.

After being told he wouldn't be allowed back in the dug-out, Mourinho tried to take a seat in the front row of the stand to be close to the action but was sent away where he finally found a place at the end of a row in the directors' box.
