Jakarta (B2B) - The recent floods that hit several areas in Indonesia are not seriously affecting agricultural sector. The government claimed the impact on food production is less than 1%, which is nonthreatening toward food availability.

Minister of Agriculture Suswono said the current climate change does not create a significant impact on production but distribution lines from production center to market centers would potentially disrupted.

“Food sector remains safe but its distribution sector should be monitored,” he said at the office of Ministry of Agriculture, Friday (1/19).

Suswono said agriculture is currently reaching the growing season so that most of the plants affected by flood are new plants. Therefore, he added, it would only delay the growing season.

As a form of anticipation, he said the ministry would provide support of plant seeds to the affected areas. These seeds will come from national seed reserves (CBN), while its fund will be sought from the contingency budget.

“The contingency fund like CBN is a food emergency fund used by the government to deal with disaster,” he said.
