SINCE their return to the Premier League in 2010, Newcastle's scouting system has been lauded for its ability to discover fresh talents plying their trade under the radar.

Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse and more recently Mathieu Debuchy and Moussa Sissoko are among those to have been surprise signings and who have settled quickly and it appears Newcastle's success has inspired them to take further risks.

Some of the best transfer business can be done well before the summer and these four triallists, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, without absent bandmate Zayn Malikwere today given their chance to prove they should make the cut.

It has been said that Harry Redknapp would be prepared to give a trial to anyone on the off-chance they have the talent to make it and, perhaps reassuringly for Newcastle's fans, their club's management team showed a willingness to be hands on in a similar approach.

Manager Alan Pardew and coaching staff John Carver, Andy Woodman, Steve Stone and Peter Beardsley, the latter two former England internationals, took the boy band on in a training-ground friendly.

'It was brilliant to be here,' said Horan, who alongside his bandmates enjoyed lunch with the first team, to the club's official website. 'We'd like to thank the club and Alan Pardew for having us down and for getting us involved.'

Styles, who also sat in an ice bath, said: 'It was good fun coming out to have a look around and to meet the staff and players. We don't really get chance to come out and play - especially 11-a-side - so we really enjoyed it.'
