Nairobi (B2B) - Sedikitnya 19 orang tewas dan 11 orang lagi cedera, Rabu (2/1), ketika kendaraan angkutan umum yang mereka tumpangi terjun ke dalam lembah di Molo, sekitar 210 kilometer sebelah timur laut Nairobi.

Komandan Polisi Regional John Mbijiwe mengungkapkan 10 lelaki, tiga perempuan dan enam anak kecil tewas sekitar pukul 15.00 waktu setempat, ketika kendaraan PSV dengan 14 kursi yang di daerah ini disebut "matatu" yang kelebihan penumpang terjun ke dalam lembah di Moto Quarry, Molo.

Mbijiwe mengancam akan menindak polisi lalu lintas yang mungkin telah mengetahui kendaraan kelebihan penumpang tersebut.

"Kendaraan itu membawa 28 orang, padahal kapasitas normal 14," kata Mbijiwe sebagaimana dikutip Xinhua.

Belum lama ini Presiden Mwai Kibaki mendesak polisi agar menerapkan hukum baru lalu lintas guna mengurangi korban jiwa akibat kecelakaan lalu lintas.

Pada 2010, 10.240 kecelakaan terjadi di negeri ini, sementara hanya 7.596 kecelakaan dicatat pada 2011 dan 3.005 kecelakaan dilaporkan pada Desember 2001.

Nairobi - At least 19 people died and 11 others injured on Wednesday when a public passenger vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a valley in Molo, about 210 km northeast of Nairobi.

Regional police commander, John Mbijiwe said the 10 men, three women and six children were killed at around 15:00 hours when the 14-seater PSV locally known as matatu which was overloaded plunged into a valley at Moto Quarry in Molo.

Mbijiwe threatened to take action against traffic police officers who might not have noticed the overloaded vehicle incase it went through the police roadblocks without being noticed.

"The vehicle was carrying 28 people instead of the normal 14 capacity. It was overloaded and those who died in the incident are 10 men, six children and three women," Mbijiwe.

The accidents come barely a week after President Mwai Kibaki urged the police to enforce the new traffic laws to minimize loss of lives through road accidents.

Police statistics shows 10, 240 accidents took place and left 3, 055 people dead in 2010 whereas only 7,596 accidents were recorded in 2011 with 3,005 having been reported as at December 2011.
