New Delhi (B2B) - Setidaknya 40 orang tewas dan 15 lainnya luka-luka setelah satu bus penumpang swasta terjun ke sebuah sungai di negara bagian barat India Maharashtra, kata saluran televisi NDTV pada Selasa.

Kecelakaan itu terjadi pada pukul 02.30 waktu setempat, ketika sopir bus dalam perjalanan dari Goa ke Mumbai kehilangan kendali kendaraan di jembatan Bharna di atas Sungai Jagbudi, sekitar 190 kilometer (118 mil) dari ibu kota Mumbai Maharashtra.

Bus tersebut menabrak seluruh pagar jembatan dan jatuh ke dalam sungai.

"Ada beberapa orang asing di atas bus itu, seorang berkebangsaan Rusia telah diselamatkan," kata NDTV di situsnya.

Meski terluka, sopir bus selamat dalam kecelakaan itu, dan polisi sedang memeriksa dia apakah di dalam darahnya mengandung alkohol.

Mayoritas penumpang terluka dalam kecelakaan itu, menderita cedera pada kepala pada saat bus tersebut mendarat ke sungai dengan atap terbalik.

Para korban yang terluka dibawa ke rumah sakit sipil terdekat, Khed, kata NDTV seperti dikutip RIA Novosti.

The accident occurred at 2:30 pm local time, when the bus driver on the way from Goa to Mumbai lost control of the vehicle on the bridge over the River Jagbudi Bharna, about 190 kilometers (118 miles) from the capital city of Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The bus crashed into a fence across the bridge and fell into the river.

"There are some strangers on the bus, the Russians have been saved," NDTV said on its website.

Although injured, the bus driver survived the accident, and police are checking whether he is in the blood contained alcohol.

The majority of passengers were injured in the accident, suffered head injuries when the bus landed upside down with the roof down to the river.

The injured victims were taken to a nearby civilian hospital, Khed, NDTV said as quoted by RIA Novosti.
