Jakarta (B2B) - The government expects labor in the agricultural sector increased, but the decrease in agricultural land forced the Minister of Agriculture Suswono should choose the number of farmers decreased to be ideal comparison farmers to agricultural land.

The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that food crops sub-sector employment decreased by about 4.9% in 2012.

"Units of agricultural land compared to the number of farmers should be broader to achieve prosperity. Forced me say today is more ideal number of farmers decreased workforce," said Suswono when meeting with Commission IV of the House of Representatives in Jakarta, Wednesday (16/1).

Suswono admits the idea is controversial, especially as opposed to the ministry he leads a work program. But with the lack of productive land in Indonesia, the condition that he considers the most rational while comparing similar conditions with the trend of global agriculture.

"I admit that employment is a debatable issue. But from the advice of various experts, including outside the country the number of farmers on the farm down the better," said the minister of the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS).

Minister of Agriculture adds a workforce reduction occurred primarily in food crops sub-sector. Because land conversion to agricultural fields are still a major limiting factor. Especially transfer paddy fields to palm oil.
