CYNTHIA LENNON, the first wife of John Lennon, died yesterday aged 75 in Majorca following a battle with cancer. Cynthia, then 18, met John, then 17, at Liverpool Art College in their first term and later had one son together, Julian.
But, after the pair married, she was forced to live in silence through Beatlemania and had to deny being his wife. After several affairs, he finally cheated on her with Yoko, prompting a swift divorce in which she received 100,000 poundsterling. The musician later denied ever being in love with Cynthia - despite his love letters telling the exact opposite story.
Cynthia met Lennon at art school in Liverpool in 1957 and the couple married just before Beatlemania transformed her husband from a jobbing musician into one of the most famous men in the world.
At the height of the Beatles' early success, she was kept so far in the background that many of Lennon's female fans were not even aware of her existence, and she stayed at home bringing up Julian while the Fab Four toured the world and topped the charts. (Pictures of MailOnline)
