1. Add three more players in the transfer window (including two defenders)

United have been targeting Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal but a senior club source was keen on Monday to diffuse speculation that a move was imminent.
It is understood United feel Juventus’ £34million asking price for the 27-year-old is excessive and there will need to be a compromise from either side for a deal to be struck.
The noises United have received from the player have been encouraging and Van Gaal is a keen admirer, having previously tried to sign Vidal for Bayer Leverkusen.
Other targets include Roma’s Kevin Strootman and AC Milan’s Nigel de Jong. Van Gaal is thought to be happy with his striking options, but could be tempted into the market for a dynamic and pacy winger. Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus was a serious target while David Moyes was in charge but Memphis Depay of PSV and Holland could now be a more realistic alternative.
2. Cleanse the squad of the debris
United officials have been informed that Van Gaal prefers to work with a squad of around 23 players, which means that several will have to be offloaded.

The narrative of the battle for supremacy between Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie has occupied too many pages of newsprint for United’s liking in recent times.

Rooney will have the next few weeks to impress Van Gaal, while Van Persie takes an extended break after the World Cup.
4. The Class of ´92
Phil Neville’s future with Manchester United remains unresolved but it appears increasingly likely that he will have to accept a heavily reduced role next season.
He had talks with executive vice-chairman Edward Woodward pencilled in for last week as the two parties attempt to find a compromise solution.
Neville, a graduate of the Class of ‘92, was brought to Old Trafford by the Moyes last summer in the role of first-team coach and was then retained when Giggs assumed managerial responsibilities for the final four games of the season.
However, Van Gaal has brought in his own men to work alongside himself and Giggs, who will work as assistant manager. Some of the criticism Moyes received as United manager was unfair but much of it was entirely justified.
By the end, United were a shattered train-wreck, divided and miserable. Younger players felt they were excessively punished for one particular night out on the town while experienced heads had lost faith in the manager’s methods long before. There was also a feeling that certain players were granted preferential treatment.
