Langkah sederhana dimulainya revolusi budaya dan sosial di negara maju, dan SMS digunakan untuk kesepakatan bisnis hingga menyampaikan lamaran pernikahan.
Kecenderungannya melejit pada 1998 dengan diluncurkannya layanan 'pay as you go' oleh empat operator seluler utama dunia.

'The availability of a wider range of communications tools, like instant messaging and social networking sites, means people might be sending fewer SMS messages.
