JOEY Barton has re-entered the world of education by embarking on a philosophy degree.

The controversial QPR midfielder is studying at Roehampton University, and confirmed on his official Twitter profile he went to his first lecture on Thursday.

He posted: ´Off to my first lecture this afternoon. Eyes peeled, ears open, brain engaged.´

Barton often uses his Twitter profile to quote famous philosophers like Friedrich Nietzsche.

The death of sports councillor Peter Kay, co-founder of the Sporting Chance clinic earlier this month inspired Barton to take up the course.

Kay set up the centre with Tony Adams following the former Arsenal captain´s battle with alcoholism, and helped and treated a host of stars including Barton and Paul Gascoigne.

Barton was the first player to wear rainbow laces to combat homophobia in football, and has been an ever-present for Harry Redknapp´s side.

The west London side sit top of the Championship after last weekend´s1-0 win at Yeovil, and host Middlesborough on Saturday.

The former Manchester City and Newcastle star spent last season on loan at French Ligue 1 side Marseille, but has returned to join the Hoops´ fight for promotion back to the top flight.
