Jakarta (B2B) - In order to win the international market competition, Indonesian horticultural products should be able to compete. Both in terms of price, distribution, and quality and provide farmers with post-harvest handling to improve the production and quality of domestic horticultural products.
Director of the Research Center for Tropical Horticulture, Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) Sobir said Indonesia must act quickly to anticipate the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (CAFTA), which would negate the import quota system.
"Domestic production of fruit and vegetables should be able to meet national needs, however large production has not been supported by good quality, then the government should immediately improve the quality of agriculture," said Sobir in a dialogue titled ´Independence or Scarcity, Finding Solutions Commerce Fruits and Horticulture´ in Jakarta, Tuesday (23/4).
He added, in the distribution must immediately implement the short distribution, to increase the price at the farm level, as long as this consumer prices surged by 30% of the selling price of farmers.
"If the distribution pattern of shortened, farmers could distribute agricultural products directly to retail than through a multi-layered collection before it gets to the consumer, so consumers do not have to worry about the expensive price," said Sobir.
