Jakarta (B2B) - The performance of textile and textile products (TPT) sector is expected to decline in 2013. Decline in performance was characterized by low competitiveness in the export market, increased production costs, fierce competition with China products, as well as weakening demand in the United States and Europe due to economic crisis.

Ernovian G Ismy, Secretary General of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), said the decline in the performance of textile industry next year is also due to exports stagnancy outlook.

“Exports in 2013 will be the same with this year's projection, amounted to US$ 12.58 million," he said. This year, export is projected to decline 3.96 percent compared to last year's US$ 13.1 billion.

The impact of global crisis in US and Europe caused slowdown in textile export from Indonesia. Additionally, market share of textile manufacturers in the domestic market in 2013 is estimated to reach 46%.

In terms of competitiveness, lower performance of textile industry next year is affected by high-cost economy, as a result of the projection of increasing production elements, such as raw materials, labor, and energy.

The increase in the minimum wages and electricity tariffs by 15% in 2013 is estimated to make the condition even worse for export performance.

"Based on data from API, the realization of exports fell 6.1 percent year-on-year from US$6.76 billion in the first half of last year to US$6.38 billion in the first half of this year," Ernovian said.

The largest decline of textile exports occurred in European market, which amounted to 9.6%, while in the US market it edged down by 0.8%. Although there was a slight increase in the Japanese market, it cannot compensate for the decline experienced in the Europe and US markets.
