Jakarta (B2B) - Several banks clarify that they are becoming more selective in distributing loans to the coal mining sector, considering the decrease in mining commodity prices due to the global economic slowdown. Bank executives said the policy was not affected by the steps taken by global financial institutions that curb their financing to the coal sector that is deemed less environmentally friendly.
Jahja Setiaatmadja, President Director of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk, said the company will reduce its loan distribution to the commodity and heavy equipment sectors. He said that the drop in commodity prices caused the company to become prudent in distributing loans to the two sectors.
“This business is slightly volatile, and we are very prudent in distributing loans there,” Setiaatmadja said.
Bank Central Asia, also known as BCA, targets its loan distribution to climb 22 percent this year. The company will increase loan exposure to the telecommunication, infrastructure and textile sectors. BCA’s corporate loan distribution for the first quarter of 2013 rose 17.2 percent to Rp87.61 trillion (US$8.84861 billion).
PT BNI Tbk clarified that the company will not finance the mining sector, and especially the coal sector. Gatot M. Suwondo, President Director of BNI, said the company will only focus on existing customers.
