Jakarta (B2B) - Umar S. Bakry, Executive Director of the National Survey Institution (LSN), said that Islamic figures would not be able to compete with Joko Widodo´s popularity in terms of running for the 2014 presidential election.
"It´s pointless if Islamic parties want to propose their own presidential candidate. Realistically, [they can only propose] vice presidential candidates," Umar said during a press conference at the Hotel Atlet Century, Sunday, November 24.
Umar´s statement was made based on a survey conducted by LSN on October 20, which invovled 1,240 respondents in 34 provinces. The survey openly asked was there any Islamic figure that could potentially unite Islamic parties in the 2014 Election.
Mahfud Md., former Constitutional Court Chief Justice, was considered to be capable in delivering the task with 16.4 percent of vote, followed by Rhoma Irama with 12.7 percent and Muhaimin Iskandar with 9.6 percent.
However, in his research, Umar concluded that Mahfud Md. would not be able to compete with Jokowi even though he was considered to have potential in uniting the Islamic Parties.
"As long as Jokow and Prabowo are still running, it´ll be hard to compete. At least Mahfud Md. can be a candidate for vice president," he said.
The research also shed light on the fate of Islamic parties in legislative election and presidential election in 2014. The survey showed that 45.6 percent of the people admitted to support the plan to establish a coalition of Islamic parties.
